HOURS: Fir-Sat 12PM-12AM
At Shinya Shokudo, we offer purely the highest quality meat and vegetables prepared by expert chefs in an intimate and refined modern atmosphere. We make all our seasonings in house with simple ingredients in order to maintain the original flavors to ensure authenticity. Our lunch menu is limited to bentos, differing from our dinner menu which has a bigger selection because Yakitori are meant to be enjoyed in the evening as a late-night meal with friends and family. We have included premium seasonal menu items such as Uni Mentaiko Udon and Foie Gras Don to showcase our Chef’s take on seasonal ingredients.
We offer a variety of drinks at Shinya Shokudo, from beer and sake to wine and cocktails to non-alcoholic drinks such as fruit tea. However, being an Izakaya restaurant, yakitori or skewered chicken barbecue is essential delicacy for beer and sake in Japan. Our sakes and whiskeys are made in Japan by famous brewery. While most of our drinks are imported from overseas, we work with local company Pike Place brewery for the beer we carry.
The space was designed to take on a modern contemporary feel accented with international and exotic tones from the hanged arts and lanterns which came from Japan. Oak seating with ambient lighting in a mixture of wood and stone to bring out an upscale feel suited for downtown Seattle. We assure that our place will not only be a neighborhood restaurant but also one worth traveling to as well. We want our guests to not only enjoy the food but to relax, enjoy, and socialize in our beautiful inviting space with a warm sake.
Story of Shinya Shokudo
The name “Shinya Shokudo” translates to Midnight Diner in English and originates from a well-known Japanese manga. The manga highlights tasty meals being made, served, and consumed by customers who tell their story of living in a time of social crises, inequality, and more. Although the food offered at this small restaurant hidden in an obscure alley was limited to one item, the Master Chef would readily cook anything to order. This human touch, his kindness and willingness to listen has made his restaurant a gathering place for a band of eccentric down-and-out regulars who have witnessed and experienced different aspects of life. These enchanting tales add flavor to the Master Chef’s simple yet conceivably delicious meals, creating a wholesome and satisfying experience. We would like to make Shinya Shokudo a place of comfort, an escape, a patient ear, and a sense of home where nostalgia is brought to life with friends and family around.
Yakitori (grilled skewers) are known as the origin of Japanese fast food but at Shinya Shokudo, we strive to bring not only the best quality ingredient but educate our guests that yakitori is more than just a grilled chicken skewered onto a bamboo stick over an open-fire grill. There’s a variety of seasoning that pairs best with different flavors and parts of the meats offered. As you reach the inner parts of the meat, you increase the depth of flavor. The best part about eating yakitori is that there are no rules on how to enjoy them! We have also catered our menu towards non-meat eaters by adding mushroom, tofu, zucchini yakitori and more.
